Câu chuyện và những dị bản đã trở thành đề tài nghiên cứu từ khá lâu.[12] Năm 1893, Marian Roalfe Cox xuất bản sách Cinderella: Three Hundred and Forty-Five Variants of Cinderella, Catskin and, Cap o'Rushes, Abstracted and Tabulated with a Discussion of Medieval Analogues and Notes.[12]

Cinderella được xếp vào loại 510A (nhân vật nữ bị đối xử bất công) trong hệ thống phân loại Aarne-Thompson. Một số truyện tiêu biểu thuộc loại này là Tấm Cám, Rushen Coatie, Fair, Brown and Trembling và Katie Woodencloak.[13]
